JT at The Abergwaun Hotel, Fishguard
Being local to Fishguard there are many good places to eat.
Over the last few years the restaurants and even some pubs have pushed the barrier to bring some fantastic food to the north of the County. However if you have a special occasion or fancy treating yourself there is only one place that springs to mind, JT @ The Abergwaun Hotel.
This month my wife and I were lucky enough to be invited along to JT's to sample their menu.
Upon arrival the ever charming W saw us to our table. It is the first time I have been in The Abergwaun since the refurbishment, and might I say what a transformation. The layout is pretty much the same, however where the pool room used to be is now the pass for the kitchen. This really is nice to see, the chef and kitchen staff plating up for all to see.
First things first, the cocktail menu. Over the course of the evening I sampled three house cocktails, A bad Hair Day, Raspberry Daquiri and an Expresso Martini all of which hit the spot. I will give a special mention to the Bad Hair Day, it is like nothing I have tasted in the past. It is made from chilli so the spice really does hit you but is soon cooled off by the drink itself. Highly reccommeded.
I'm told the menu is ever changing so some of these items may not be available when you visit. We started with some freshly caught prawns from "Walshie's Shellfish" they had been caught that afternoon, simple with just a squeeze of lemon delicious all the same. To accompany these we tried the pork fries, salty and tasty dipped in the siracha mayonnaise, absolutely spot on.
On to the starters. I opted for the mackerel, beautifully cooked served with a horse-radish mayo and pickled beetroot. Again I would have to say one of the nicest starters I have had. Rach went for the Chicken liver parfait, served with hot crusty bread, lots of it and full of flavour!
Main course was a tricky one for me to decide, I really wanted the sirloin but as Rach has chosen that I thought I would try something different so that we had a couple of dishes to review. After a lot of deliberation I decided on the pork mixed grill, tender pork loin, pork sausage, black and white pudding, crispy crackling and a divine piece of pork belly. I never really order a pork dish but this will definatly change my way of thinking going forward. The sirloin, cooked to perfection in fact I wont go into too much detail just look at the picture below.
Main courses 10/10 and a real "Taste Sensation"
We both decided against a dessert as we were both full and the cocktails had started taking effect hehe.
So Jt's @ The Abergwaun Fishguard - My overview is it is a modern contemporary establishment with a very ambitious chef in Dan Jones, he moves with the times and seasons and certainly takes advantage of local quality Pembrokeshire ingredients. The food is there with the best I have tasted and I can assure you we will be back, in fact we have booked a table of 20 for my birthday, see you then guys!
BRAVO!
