The Wolfscastle Hotel

The Wolfscastle Hotel

This month's review comes from Wolfscastle Country Hotel, and this was a very special anniversary celebration.

8 years to the day Rachel and I "Tied the knot" at what we know as The Allt-yr-Afon.

I thought it would be fitting to return and try their brasserie menu.

We arrived a little early so that we could sample the cocktail menu. We started with the Pembrokeshrie Bramble, what is in it I couldn't tell you but it was sharp and fresh tasting, very nice indeed.

The menu has a little of everything. For the appetisers we sampled the ox cheek bonbons and a bruschetta bread with tomato and mozzarella.

The bonbons were really rich and tasty and seasoned very well and the tomato bread was crispy and delivered a fresh taste of Italy.

Moving onto the starters, I opted for the Scallop lobster and haddock Gratin. Before it arrived at the table the waitress who's name I didn't catch but was an exception at front of house host came to say that they had run out of haddock and if I would like to change my starter or double up on lobster, being a man of finer tastes I went for the double up ;).

Wolfscaste Food and Drink

This came and was absolutely beautiful, the sauce was a taste of the sea and was demolished in moments.

Rachel not being as adventurous went for the goats cheese and red onion tart, she informed me that it was delicious and was highlighted by the tangy balsamic dressing.

Now for the "pièce de résistance" and by far my favourite part of the meal, braised ox cheek, pomme purée, tender stem broccoli, beetroot and horse radish.

Wow, just wow, the meat was so tender and the sauce was so, so good.

Accompanied with creamy mash, this really was comfort food at its best. I would have to give this dish a 10/10. Rach as always went for the steak. I think we will have to try a fish restaurant for next months review so that we can review something that isn't sirloin or rib eye. However again she insists the steak was cooked to perfection, the peppercorn sauce was spicy and creamy and the triple cooked chips were crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle.

Again like last time we didn't have room for a pudding so opted for another Pembrokeshire Bramble, a great way to end a lovely evening.

I would just like to give a special mention to the three front of house staff for the evening. All were so polite and nothing too much trouble. They work hard and deserve some recognition, well done guys!
