Môr Ffres, So Fresh, So Good!

Our very own Tim Evans was out and about again, this time venturing up Dinas to see what all the fuss was about at a little place called Môr Ffres.

I’d been meaning to check out the chip shop in Dinas for some time, but my usual weekly journeys don’t take me in that direction. Last Friday, however, they did. My son had a football match in Newport, which gave me the perfect excuse.

The queue outside suggested we were onto a winner. That said, service was brisk and efficient thanks to the young team behind the counter. The young lady who took our order was knowledgeable about the menu and even recommended the Irish curry. Wow, but more on that shortly!

Her colleague was just as sharp, serving and wrapping with lightning speed, making sure our order landed in our hands piping hot and ready to be demolished.

We opted for a couple of fish suppers, along with two children’s battered sausage and chip meals, of course with the much-talked-about Irish curry sauce on the side.

Let’s start there: the curry sauce was, without a doubt, the best chip shop curry sauce I’ve ever tasted. Thick and rich in texture, it had a perfect sweet-and-spicy balance — a true chip-dipping sensation.

As for the fish supper, wow again. A thick cut of cod, meaty and firm yet flaking beautifully at the touch of a fork, encased in a light, golden-brown crispy batter. Absolutely stunning.

It’s hard to get a detailed review from five-year-old twins, but the scraped-clean boxes told me everything I needed to know — the kids loved it too.

Môr Ffres, situated on the main road on the Newport side of Dinas, is a gem. Reasonably priced, serving the freshest food, spotless inside, and run by attentive, friendly staff.

What more could you ask for? A real winner, and one that firmly earns its place on the FeelGood Magazine “You Gotta Try This Place!” list of great eateries.
